Edge / CDN request path

A comparison of published edge request paths — Cloudflare anycast + Unimog, Fastly PoP/routing docs, Netflix Open Connect BGP-informed steering, and AWS CloudFront delivery — not an invented “generic CDN” topology.

Problem. Engineers often draw one unlabeled CDN box. Real public designs differ: anycast multi-service edges, DNS/PoP routing products, embedded ISP caches with BGP prefix steering, and managed CloudFront-style distribution each publish different control vs byte planes.

Anycast & global traffic steering

Compare published steering mechanisms: BGP anycast (Cloudflare), AWS Global Accelerator anycast product path, Azure Front Door traffic acceleration, Fastly routing-to-edge docs, and Netflix BGP-informed Open Connect steering — not one universal “global load balancer.”

Problem. “Steer users to the best edge” is underspecified. DNS steering, anycast, managed anycast accelerators, and control-plane URL selection with BGP inputs are different mechanisms with different failure domains.
